Application for Certificate of Eligibility

This is an application made in advance to obtain a certificate proving which residence status corresponds to the activities a foreign national intends to engage in and that those activities meet the requirements for entry into Japan.

For example, the certificate is required for Japanese companies to bring foreign nationals from abroad to Japan as employees.

Application for Permission to Change Residence Status

This is an application for permission to change residence status when a foreign national residing in Japan under a certain status wants to engage in activities corresponding to a different status.

For example, when a foreign national residing in Japan under ‘Student’ residence status graduates from a university and starts working for a company in Japan, the status needs to be changed to a work-related status before working.

Application for Extension of Period of Stay

This is an application for an extension of the period of stay made by a foreign national residing in Japan under a certain residence status who wants to renew the period without changing the current status.

The application is required to obtain permission to stay in Japan while maintaining the same residence status.

Application for Permanent Residence

This is an application made by a foreign national already residing in Japan under a certain residence status who wishes to change to the 'Permanent Resident' status in order to live permanently in Japan.

In principle, to obtain permission for permanent residency, a foreign national must have continuously resided in Japan for at least 10 years and meet the requirements of 'good conduct,' 'independent livelihood,' and 'benefit to Japan.

Application for Permission for Extra Activities Beyond Residence Status

This is an application required when a foreign national residing in Japan under a residence status such as 'work-related' or 'student' intends to engage in paid activities other than those permitted under the current residence status.

For example, it is required when a foreign national residing in Japan under a 'Student' residence status intends to work part-time to earn income.

Application for Permission to Acquire Residence Status

This application concerns the acquisition of residence status by foreign nationals who have stayed in Japan without completing landing procedures wish to remain in Japan for more than 60 days from the date the reason for their stay arose.

Specifically, it applies to cases such as individuals who lost their Japanese nationality after acquiring a foreign nationality through marriage to a foreign national, or children born in Japan to parents who are foreign nationals.
